Biography / History
Following the passing of enabling act in 1885 by the Michigan state legislature, the library of Young Men's Association of Jackson merged with the libraries of District One and Seventeen of the Union School District to form the Jackson Free Public Library, to be maintained by the City of Jackson. The library opened on February 16, 1886, on the second floor of the Cooley Block building on the northeast corner of Mechanic and Cortland. Miss Celia Waldo was the first librarian.

The library later moved to the Bloomfield Block in 1895.

In 1901, Andrew Carnegie gifted the City of Jackson $70,000 to build a new library for the growing city. The new library opened on August 20, 1906
